The Weight We Carry

This performance represents the physical weight soldiers carry during their deployments and the invisible weight they continue to carry long after they arrive home. I used sandbags as a symbol for this weight. I would not allow myself to step forward until I moved twelve heavy sandbags along with me until I reached the end of the allotted performance space, where I built a small makeshift trench wall. I then began to lift the sandbags up and slam them down or throw them off stage as an act of letting go. I left the stage carrying two sandbags, showing that you can relieve some weight but that you never fully let go of the weight.
